Mission

Meryan is a family business with the main objective of rescuing and preserving the tradition of Córdoba Leather, a practically disappeared and devalued craft, which came from the 10th century and which gave much fame to the city of Córdoba.

The organization also exists to cover the need to provide a native and quality product to tourists who come to the city as well as to the people of Córdoba, to companies and public and private entities that want to give away artisanal items from Córdoba.

Craft production has a significant cultural component, in that it constitutes part of the country's heritage and a source of dissemination of our native culture, but it also represents a sustainable productive activity that generates acceptable livelihoods for those who carry it out.

Our history

The beginning
1952-1958

The beginning

Although from a commercial point of view the MERYAN workshop officially began its production in May 1958, its artistic activity predates that date and was developed privately in the own studio of its initiator, the painter Ángel López-Obrero and his wife Mercedes Miarons Feliu. From the names of its founders comes the word Meryan (MERcedes and ANgel).

These activities began in Córdoba towards the end of 1951 and were due to a coincident inclination for the leather arts and a desire to do something for the rebirth of this ancient industry in said city.

As notable commissions we can mention a casket commissioned by the Hon. Córdoba City Council for a gift of orange seeds from the Patio of the Mosque-Cathedral to the Garden of Peace in Hiroshima (Japan) or a complete notary commissioned by a Córdoba firm with which it was presented to the President of the United States of America. America J. F. Kenedy.

Workshop Open to the Public
1958-1980

Workshop Open to the Public

In 1956 to the Hon. The city council inaugurated the “El Zoco” Municipal Crafts Market, where the Meryan workshop installed its first premises open to the public.

The production of that stage was very scarce and “El Zoco” did not obtain the success that was expected, which is why the Meryan workshop had to carry out a new transformation, settling in May 1958, permanently, in Calleja de Las Flores, the place most frequented by tourism.

In the 60s, to guarantee the continuity of the company, Carlos and Alejandro López-Obrero joined the workshop. Their effort and work will guarantee the continuity of the artisan workshop for many years.

Some interesting works are the manufacture of a screen for the Altman&Co store on Fifth Avenue in New York or the decoration of the dining cars of the Talgo Barcelona-Geneva and Barcelona-Paris trains.

The publication of an article talking about Meryan in the New York Times in 1982 helped to gain much more popularity in the United States in addition to other merits achieved such as the distinction of Ángel López-Obrero by the Junta de Andalucía in 1989 with the medal of silver awarded by the board to people who have stood out throughout their lives in different fields of Andalusian social and cultural activity.

Between the years 1980-1990, an art gallery was opened for painting exhibitions and sales of products from the workshop.

Furthermore, in 1991 we participated in the Spanish Crafts Exhibition in Japan. The Andalusian Crafts Exhibition was held in Kyoto (Japan). “Spain Fair” organized by the Japanese company Kintetsu.

As the most relevant work in 1997, the company carried out guadamecí cladding of a room in a castle in the city of Alanson (France). We also highlight the manufacture of two carved and gilded armchairs covered in carved guadamecí leather with baroque style designs commissioned by the Barcelona Provincial Council to be exhibited in the Palau Güell.
